Reports of a Crash: Fergus Sweeney
Official Opening: Saturday 12th January, 4pm
Mayo filmmaker, Fergus Sweeney, was the successful recipient of the Film Mayo Creative Ireland Residency Award in partnership with Ballina Arts Centre. Film Mayo is a Mayo Arts Service, Mayo County Council initiative.
On the 14th March 2017, Fergus was setting in for a quiet evening as an Irish coast helicopter came into ear shot when it passed over his home village of Blacksod. Moments later that helicopter would crash.
A search for the missing crew would last 42 days and Fergus would find himself reporting on the tragedy for the duration of the search.
As part of the first Film Mayo Residency Award Fergus is now making a feature length documentary focused on telling the story through a series of interviews with local Erris people who found themselves very much affected by the tragedy and resulting 42 day search.
As part of this residency Fergus will hold an exhibition of photography, as well as giving a talk on his experience reporting those events at the time and his plans for the forthcoming documentary.
