Aideen Barry’s ‘Minefield’ will be launched as the public art commission for Ballina Arts Centre. To celebrate the launch Aideen will give a talk on her practice at 4.30pm. She will discuss her extensive and multi versatile practice, which spans a range of art forms and approaches, including sculpture, performance, drawing and animation. She will discuss the Minefield commission and give an insight into the many collaborations that take place within the production processes of her work. ‘Minefield’ is a large sculptural installation of five aluminium, brass and steel ‘mines’ which were made following a residency the artist undertook at NASA Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The works began as hypothetical drawings and animations, then moved to a series of films shot in zero gravity, and then into a series of sculptural objects that became known as ‘Weapons of Mass Consumption’. The work was exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy to great critical acclaim in the 2009 ‘Futures’ exhibition, and will provide an iconic permanent installation in the entrance to Ballina Arts Centre.
‘Minefield’ was commissioned by Mayo County Council and was funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government under the Percent for art scheme.

Aideen Barry is a practising Visual Artist based in the West of Ireland. Her work is know both nationally and internationally, she has shown nationally in galleries and institutions such as Mother's Tankstation Gallery, The Royal Hibernian Academy, The Crawford Municipal Gallery, The Butler Gallery, Galway Arts Centre, and internationally in representing Ireland at The Loop Biennale in Spain, The Moderne Mussett in Stokholm Sweden, The Wexner Centre in Ohio, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Centre in New York, the Museum des Beux Arts in Lyon, the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris, the Louise T. Bloudin Gallery in London, SFMOMA in California, the Yerba Buena Centre in California and the Headlands Centre for the Arts in San Francisco. Barry has received numerous awards for her practice, to name but a few: The Claremorris Open Award in 2004, the Project New Work Award from the Arts Council of Ireland ( 2008/2009/2010), a Bursary Award from the Arts Council of Ireland, the Silent Light Film Award at the Cork Film Festival, Travel and Training Awards from the Arts Council of Ireland and in 2010 was shortlisted for the AIB Prize. Aideen Barry also acts and an advocate for visual artists based in the west of Ireland in her role as Western Representative for Visual Artists Ireland. She teaches both in Galway Mayo Institute of Technology and at the Limerick School of Art and Design as a Lecturer in Sculpture and Combined Media.
