Fake is Real
Theatre for Secondary Schools
Fake Is Real is a piece of theatre based on reality but – at its heart – entirely fictional and presented in a heightened dramatic content. Most people and also the characters in the play have their public and their private face and often hid behind a ‘mask’ to make sure that the truth – their true feelings – stay hidden. Many of the characters in this story have self-esteem issues.
Family life can sometimes influence self-esteem. Some parents spend more time criticizing their kids and the way they look than praising them, which can reduce the ability to develop good self-esteem. The parents don’t appear as characters in this play, but their presence is certainly felt, in the cracks between, between the lines.
People may also experience negative comments and hurtful teasing about the way they look from classmates and peers. Sometimes racial and ethnic prejudice is the source of such comments. Although these often come from ignorance, sometimes they can affect someone’s body image and self-esteem.
